Tacos al Pastor!

Norfolk Virginia Taco Festival 2018

July 19, 2018

Shelby and I were at wine tasting at Origin Wine Social with our go-to +1 Rachel told us about the Norfolk Taco Festival happening Norfolk the following week.

What?

How did I not know about a taco festival happening in the area?! I'm slipping... When I got home later that night I checked it out - over 75 varieties of tacos were going to be served at the Waterside District. Heck yeah, I'm in!

I was able to get into the sold out event and was you could have guessed it was packed! There was a line around the park waiting to get in because it had met capacity. They were letting people in on shifts. I think there were people at the door who thought they could buy tickets, unfortunately they had to be turned away.

I found Rachel and Shon already full of tacos and sipping lagers. I chatted a minute but wanted to run around real quick to get some shots of the action. First thing I notice is that there lines everywhere! That combined with the heat produced some griping from the crowd. This being the first event they've thrown in the space, there will be some growing pains. I'm sure they'll make the appropriate adjustments next time they do this. Back to tacos.

There were a ton of tacos being slung by the restaurants that participated, just about any variety you could think of. My favorite was the al Pastor I found being made by a new outfit called Javi's. I mean there is something sexy about seeing meat on a spit slowly roasting. Reminds me of the donner kebabs we would get in Germany.

I bumped into a few friends while I was there and I would grab my drinks from the inside of Waterside to skip the lines outside. I'm not going to ramble here but check out the rest of the photos and catch it next year!

Taco Tuesday at Terrapin

February 13, 2017

If you know me, you know when someone asks me what my favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach is I'll say I have a few! Yeah, it's a cop out but there are so many places to eat in Virginia Beach and I've only visited a fraction of them I can't say for sure what the best one is out there. It's also a very subjective topic, we're all different!

OK, evasive talk aside, I will say that one of my favorite places to eat in the city is Terrapin. Hands down! I've posted and written about them a lot over the years but I just found another reason to visit the shop - TACO TUESDAY! Shelby saw it out there and said we should try it. $10 for hand-pressed tortillas with a carnitas plate and $6 Blood Orange Margaritas! You can't beat that for a meal at Terrapin.

Mrs. Shelby!

I'm sure most of you have heard of Taco Tuesday it's basically an excuse to go out and eat tacos on a slow night for restaurants. It's been around since the early 80s and maybe earlier according to some stories.

That being said don't think that Terrapin really has slow nights, we went the second week of this taco celebration and got there about 5:45, 45 minutes after the door opened and had to be put on a waiting list. I swear the regulars, most whom appeared retired, must have been waiting at the doors and rushed the bar! Oh, forgot to mention Taco Tuesday is bar service only.

I'm not complaining about the wait because that gave Shelby and me a chance to check out the drink menu, chat, and eyeball what Rodney (ownder/chef) and crew were cooking up through the open kitchen's window. Love how he works, super chill. While we waited we sipped on a Little Italy and a Carré Me Home. The Little Italy has bourbon, cocchi barolo chinato, angostura bitters, and a lemon twist; the Carré Me Home is made with bourbon, triple sec, Drambuie, sweet vermouth.

Terrapin has a high-speed menu system :)

After finishing our drinks and chatting with Rodney a little bit we finally got our seat at the bar. We asked for the tacos, of course, and a couple of Blood Orange Margaritas. The oranges were hand-squeezed and the drink itself was great. The carnitas were perfect, not that I expected anything less from Terrapin. The portion was nice, I was able to get four tacos out of my serving and left feeling full.

Basically, make an effort to hit Taco Tuesday at Terrapin. I don't know how long they'll do it and it's an easy way to get a quality meal at a great price.

A little kick-off for the Independence Day weekend - Avery's Maharaja!

Dinner at Lynnhaven Pub

July 8, 2015

Our friends Cappy and Lauren wanted to meet-up at The Pub for dinner and a drink. Obviously I do not need a whole lot of convincing to grab a drink at Lynnhaven Pub and Shelby was up for it. Done deal.

Friday nights host "Charlotte Hour" out back where Charlotte, longtime Pub regular, pours some of her favorites till 8:00 PM. Decent line-up too, I always enjoy a pour of the latest "Enjoy By" when I can get it.

After the tasting we headed inside for bite. Lauren said she wanted to try the ribs The Pub has been smoking this year, we crossed our fingers hoping there were some left. They used to only make them on a Thursday and only about 8-10 racks, I don't know if this is true still but they usually sell out.

She was in luck, there were some left, they had some left so she ordered up a rack and Cappy had the brisket tacos. Shelby and I had beef brisket sandwiches, it's hard not to eat that stuff whenever we go (so good, you gotta try it.)

Lauren, "You guys can have some." Um, not unless I want to lose a finger!

We had a round of drinks after we finished eating then gave Cappy and Lauren a ride home, it started to rain and they rode their bikes to meet us earlier. Luckily my car (Honda Element) is like a Transformer and I folded the seats up and we crammed their two bikes, Cappy and myself in the back.

We did all this and got home in time to watch and movie. Very nice night.

Feeling a little sick, let's eat Mexican!

January 26, 2014

Busy week, so I was looking forward to the weekend. So was this sinus thing I have. Pow! Knocked me on my butt Saturday. I actually went out Saturday morning with Chayce for some biscuits and coffee but by the time I got home I was wore out. I cancelled anything I might have thought about doing for the day and sat on the couch to sweat it out. Shelby decided to run out for a while while I was being useless.

By the time Shelby got home later that evening we were both starving. She picked up some steaks but mentioned we could also go to El Taco Loco. I love El Taco Loco so of course it was a no-brainer. I bundled up and we drove across the boulevard to one of the local's favorite Tex-Mex spots.

No mas, no mas!

No mas, no mas!

One thing we love is the endless supply of chips and dip you get at these places. I still can't figure out if that's a good thing or a bad thing. If we come for dinner I usually get the Carnitas. Slow braised chunks of pork that end up a little crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside. You also get great refried beans and rice. Shelby loves the street tacos. We had to get margaritas while were there too.

My starter with the carnitas is a avocado salad. An avocado is mashed into chunks and tossed with lettuce. A light vinegar based dressing sprinkled over it and the whole thing is delicious. I don't know how they cook the carnitas exactly, but it's so good. I know it's braised in oil for hours. It's platted with refried beans and a nice rice. I always finish the beans and rice and will usually have carnitas to take home.

Another thing I like about this dish is the roasted Spring onion and jalapeno pepper. I divvy these up with every bite I take, I like making sure I get a good balance of flavors when I'm eating this stuff. It's serious business!

Shelby had two tacos: carnitas and ribeye steak. They're topped with shredded cabbage and you have sauces you can use. Both fillers are seasoned and cooked perfectly. We finished our drinks and headed home full and I was feeling a little cozy.

Taste of the Region - Part 5

October 17, 2013

Taste of the Region - Part 5

Well known regional chef Patrick Evans-Hylton asked me to be one of the judges in Taste of the Region at the Parade of Homes in Cypress Creek, Smithfield, VA. We got to check out several beautiful homes and try delicious food from the Smithfield area easily accessible to those moving into the area.

Fifth stop was one of my favorite food trucks Stuft! (they were a close 2nd for the Critic’s Choice Award) with the following:

- Jamaican Jerk Chicken

- Tacos De Alambre (chicken, bacon, pineapple)

- Beef Bulgogi

I loved all the stuff they had at…Stuft.

I took a lot of photos, so I’ll post in segments.

National Taco Day at Yard House

October 4, 2012

It was National Taco Day and National Vodka Day so we went out to the Yard House and got tacos and vodka mixed drinks :) My favorite was the Grilled Korean Pork Belly but the vegetarian Hongo Y Rajas was good too. The drinks are the Citrus Crush and Cherry Limeade.
